How the GST/HST calculator works

You give it three things: an amount, a province or territory, and whether the amount is before tax or already includes it. It finds the rates in force on the date the tax became payable (today, unless you change it) and works out every tax line to the exact fraction of a cent before it rounds anything.

Canada has thirteen provinces and territories but only seven sets of rates. Ontario's HST is 13%. Nova Scotia's has been 14% since April 1, 2025, and New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island are at 15%. Alberta and the three territories charge the 5% GST and nothing else. British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec add their own sales tax to the GST, on a separate line.

Adding tax to a price

At the general rates, each tax is worked out on the price before tax and rounded on its own line. Half a cent or more rounds up. Saskatchewan has one extra step: no PST on a purchase of 25 cents or less, and a 3-cent minimum above 25 cents through 49 cents. You'll see the unrounded figure beside each line, so you can follow the cents.

Take a $9.50 item in Vancouver. GST is 5% of $9.50, or $0.475, and rounds to $0.48. PST is 7%, or $0.665, and rounds to $0.67. The total is $10.65. Run one combined 12% line instead and you get $1.14 of tax and a total of $10.64. That's only a cent off, but it won't match the receipt.

Quebec works the same way, and that's where people go wrong by more than a cent. QST is 9.975% of the price before GST, not of the price with GST already added. On $250.00 that's $24.94 of QST and a total of $287.44. Charge it on $262.50 and you'd add $26.18, which is $1.24 too much.

Taking tax out of a total

To find the price inside an all-in total, the calculator takes the tax fraction: 13/113 of the total for Ontario's HST, 5/105 for GST on its own. With two taxes, each gets its share of the combined rate, so in British Columbia GST is 5/112 of the total and PST is 7/112. The pieces always add back up to the total you typed.

Then it checks its own work. It adds tax back onto the price it found and looks for your total to come back. Usually it does: $56.50 in Ontario splits into $50.00 and $6.50 of HST, and 13% of $50.00 is exactly $6.50.

When no price fits the total

Sometimes the total doesn't come back. At 13%, about one total in nine can't be reached from any price in whole cents, and $100.00 in Ontario is one of them. $88.49 plus HST is $99.99, and $88.50 plus HST is $100.01. There's nothing in between.

When that happens, we say so and show you both neighbours. If you're setting a round all-in price, we'd pick one of them. Then you know exactly what the receipt will say. If you're reading someone else's receipt, the split still gives you a tax and a price that add up to the total, which is how tax fractions are meant to work.

Receipts with more than one item

CRA lets a seller add up the items taxed at the same rate and round the tax once, and some tills round item by item instead. So two $2.50 items in Ontario come to $5.66 when each is rounded ($2.83 apiece) and $5.65 when they're taxed together. The provinces are firmer: British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan each treat several items bought in one transaction as one sale. Manitoba leaves out purchases from different departments of the same seller.

Take the tax out of $5.66 and you'll get $5.01, not the $5.00 the two items cost. That cent came from the rounding, not from you. Type the sum of the items that carry the same tax, and you'll match a receipt that rounds once.

Who this is for

  • You're quoting a job or pricing a shelf: $480.00 plus HST for a job in Halifax, or a $100.00 all-in price in a Toronto shop.
  • You keep the books for a small business and want every tax line on an invoice right to the cent.
  • You're holding a total with no breakdown (a card statement, an expense claim, an all-in quote) and want to know how much of it was tax.
  • You're in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba or Quebec and aren't sure the provincial tax was charged. You'll see both totals until you know.

Your questions about GST, HST and sales tax

How do I calculate HST from a total?

Take the tax fraction of the total: 13/113 in Ontario, 14/114 in Nova Scotia and 15/115 in the other HST provinces. What's left is the price. For $56.50 in Ontario, 13/113 is $6.50, so the price is $50.00. Taking 13% of the total itself gives $7.35, which overstates the tax. Then check the answer, because about one total in nine at 13% has no exact whole-cent price.

Is PST calculated before or after GST?

At the general rates, neither is charged on the other. Both use the price before tax and sit side by side as two lines. CRA tells businesses to calculate GST "on the price excluding the PST", and Manitoba says its RST "is calculated on the selling price, before the GST". In Saskatchewan, $250.00 carries $12.50 of GST and $15.00 of PST, for a total of $277.50.

Is QST calculated on top of GST?

No. QST is 9.975% of the price before GST, and GST is 5% of that same price, so they're two separate lines. On $250.00 that's $12.50 of GST and $24.94 of QST, for $287.44. If QST were charged on the GST-included $262.50, it would come to $26.18, which is $1.24 more. If a receipt shows that, it's worth a second look.

What is the HST in Nova Scotia?

It's 14%, since April 1, 2025. Before that it was 15%, the same as New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island, which are still at 15%. Around the change, the rate generally follows the day the payment fell due or was paid, whichever came first. CRA's Notice 342 has the details. Pick the date the tax became payable under "Use a different date". For payments that straddle the change, calculate each part separately.

Which provinces have HST?

Five. Ontario charges 13%, Nova Scotia 14%, and New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island 15%. HST is one tax, so an invoice shows one HST line at the full rate. CRA tells businesses not to split it into federal and provincial parts. Everywhere else you pay the 5% GST, plus a provincial sales tax in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec.

What's the difference between GST and HST?

GST is the 5% federal sales tax. In the five HST provinces it's combined with a provincial part into one harmonized tax, so you see a single HST line at 13%, 14% or 15%. Where a province keeps its own sales tax, you see GST plus PST, RST or QST as two lines. Alberta, Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut charge the GST and nothing more.

Which province's rate applies?

For goods, generally where the buyer receives them. Many services follow the buyer's address instead of where the work is done. CRA's example is a store in British Columbia that delivers a mattress to Ontario and charges Ontario's 13% HST. Personal services and work on property have their own rules. Check CRA's place-of-supply rules for your sale; we don't decide the province for you.

Do I charge GST/HST if I earn under $30,000?

For most small businesses, registration isn't required while worldwide revenue from taxable supplies is $30,000 or less in a single quarter and over four consecutive quarters. Include associated businesses, but exclude capital-property sales and financial services. Taxi and commercial ride-sharing businesses must register even below that limit. Public service bodies have different thresholds. If you're already registered, you still charge GST/HST. You can register voluntarily; a bookkeeper can help you decide.

Is there sales tax in Alberta?

Only the 5% GST. Alberta has no provincial sales tax, and neither do Yukon, the Northwest Territories or Nunavut. A $20.70 purchase there carries $1.04 of GST, for $21.74. That last cent is rounding at work: 5% of $20.70 is $1.035, and half a cent rounds up.

Where a province has its own sales tax, charge it as a separate line on the price before GST and round each line on its own. One combined line can land a cent away.

British Columbia puts it in its own words: "Generally, the rate of PST is 7% on the purchase or lease price of goods and services, with some exceptions." Its Act sets 10% on liquor and different rates on vehicles. Higher PST can also change the GST base, so check the official rules before using an exception rate. Saskatchewan charges no PST on a purchase of 25 cents or less, and at least 3 cents above 25 cents through 49 cents.
