You paid for a repair that did not hold. A collection agency keeps calling about a balance you dispute. A credit bureau file shows something that is not yours. Consumer protection lawyers here handle defective goods and vehicles, misleading sales practices, contracts signed at the door or over the phone, credit reporting mistakes, and collection agencies that push too hard.
The rules are provincial, so the route changes as you cross a border. Every province runs a consumer protection office that takes complaints about traders, and most provinces register collection agencies and can pull that registration. Quebec has its own consumer regime and its own vocabulary. Ask a lawyer how they handle matters in your province, and whether the work is hourly, a flat fee, or contingency.
Bring the contract, the receipt, the advertising you were shown, service records, and copies of what you wrote to the business and what it wrote back. Order your credit file from both bureaus if the complaint is about reporting.
Listings show what each firm publishes about consumer files and small claims work. The province and city lists lead to lawyers near you, and each city page flags which ones sit in the city itself.
Problems that begin with something you bought or borrowed. Faulty vehicles and appliances, misleading sales, door-to-door and telephone contracts, warranty refusals, credit bureau errors, and collection agencies that overstep. Provincial legislation sets most of the rules, and provincial consumer protection offices take complaints about traders. Formal debt solutions are separate work, handled by insolvency professionals rather than here.
Hourly is standard for a straightforward dispute. Flat fees appear for a demand letter or a bureau dispute. Contingency is possible in some consumer files, though it is less routine here than in injury work. Ask what happens to disbursements if the claim goes nowhere, and get the arrangement written into the retainer before anyone starts.
The signed agreement, proof of payment, the advertising you were shown, all service records, and copies of every letter or email in both directions. Photographs of the defect help. Put together a simple timeline in order. If the dispute involves reporting, bring your file from both credit bureaus rather than a summary from an app.
It depends which side hurts. A misleading sale, a defective vehicle or a wrong credit entry is a consumer file. Debt you genuinely owe and cannot pay leads to a Licensed Insolvency Trustee and a consumer proposal or bankruptcy, which is a separate process with its own professionals. A consumer lawyer can still challenge how a collection agency behaved while that runs.
Write to both bureaus and to the lender that supplied the entry, and keep everything. Bureaus have a process for investigating and correcting. Bring a lawyer in when the correction is refused, when the item keeps returning, or when the error has already cost you credit or a rental. Your paper trail matters more than how often you phoned.
