Leader vs Manager - What's the difference? Does it make difference? I've been discussing this in recent coaching and training, especially with managers prepping for a possible first executive role. A lot has been written about this by much smarter people than me. But I was taught two simple distinctions: 1. Leading is Do the right thing; Managing is Do the thing right. 2. You lead people, change and innovation. You manage projects, programs and files. Most of us lead AND manage at the same time - you lead a team of people and run a program, a service or a function. (I'm purposefully putting aside times when you lead as an individual, as an expert or in a horizontal project, etc...). Leading and managing are often two sides of the same coin. Of the same job.
