Saying chin up and stay positive might actually make things worse for the person you're trying to help. nnIt's a funny thing, but often when someone shares something difficult feeling or experiencing, there's an automatic response to cheer them up or say something to make them feel better. nnBut the reality is and the research shows, that what you're actually doing is trying to make yourself feel better because their emotions are making you feel uncomfortable. nnAnd, by forcing positivity and encouraging them to feel something else, you're unknowingly NOT acknowledging the emotions or experience that person just shared with you. nnThe impact, that person might be feeling emotionally exposed and possibly rejected - adding to what they already feel. nnHuh! How's that for Saturday morning! nnThe best thing we can do, if we want to encourage psychologically safe and empowering workplaces and organizations, (and families & communities) is to develop the skill of leaning into the discomfort of our own emotions and that of others. nnIt will simply make all the difference in the world. nn#susandavid #emotionalagility #toxicworkplace #leadership #leadershipdevelopment #toxicpositivity #selfgrowth...
