Summer is almost here! There’s a feeling in the air that causes us to look wistfully out the window and dream of our summer plans. And while I’m feeling that urge as well, I would be remiss in my duties as the Family Financial Advisor if I didn’t share some basic safety tips for your summer travel plans. After all, nothing ruins a vacation quicker than not being prepared!nn• Get your car serviced! This goes for any trip any time of year, but with higher temperatures the stress on your vehicle increases. Plan ahead and make an appointment to avoid the summer-time rush.nn• Refill your family prescriptions. You have a full agenda planned for your trip and I’m sure it doesn’t include a stop at a local pharmacy.nn• Pack water and snacks. You never know what is going to happen – freeway construction slowing down your family road trip or a delayed plane can make the kids and grandkids (and, let’s be honest, the adults) cranky. Have water and snacks packed and ready to keep everyone happy while traveling – and throw in a deck of cards or other portable games too!nn• Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen. It’s a staple, and even though we all know the benefits of sunscreen, it’s easy to forget. Be sure to pack it and set reminders to reapply regularly.nn• Be ready for natural hazards if hiking or camping. Watch for local news warnings and signs on the trail regarding conditions in the area. Be prepared to handle ticks and mosquito bites. Know how to recognize poison ivy and poison oak. Add a first aid kit to your pack and you’re ready to go!nn• If swimming at the beach or pool, watch children and be aware of hazards. Be prepared with floaties and other toys to keep everyone safe and having fun!nn• Finally – be prepared for medical emergencies. It takes just a moment to look up the nearest urgent care or emergency room and mark the information for easy reference. And, of course, know the address and cross streets for where you’re staying in case there’s a need to call 911.nnKeep these tips in mind for a safe and memorable vacation.
